In-Page Analytics

by Michael Whitaker on October 29, 2010

Guess which button I’d like to have click data for?

I know, I know. Along comes a great new feature from the Google Analytics team, which is still in beta, but if you give a mouse a cookie, he’ll want more ;-)

The add to cart button is typically a form post, and In-Page Analytics works with links, so I shouldn’t expect this data to be there. Would be great though to know how many people saw the product and then clicked that oh-so important button, wouldn’t it? You can of course get the data with event tracking for example, but it would be nice to get the data visually.

I am wondering if this can only be done with tools that track mouse movements and produce a heatmap?

If you use event tracking won’t that then show up visually?

You will of course get data directly in the Event Tracking section, but not in the In-Page Analytics report at this point.

Hey Michael! You have to add something to the URL to customize it. Maybe Google Analytics URL Builder will be enough?
If this works in Google Analytics, you will be able to estimate the number of clicks on the same call to action buttons. It’s just a thought ;)

Thanks for the idea, but the problem here is that my add to cart button is a form post, not a real link. So I am not sure how appending parameters would make a difference. But, I’d love to be proven wrong and find out if there is a way for GA to think it is a link. I would not use the URL Builder though, as using the normal campaign parameters such as utm_campaign, etc, would overwrite your external campaigns.
