Google Instant and keyword length

by Michael Whitaker on September 8, 2010

One of the things I would track in Google Analytics/Yahoo! Web Analytics  following the Google Instant rollout  is the number of words in your keywords driving traffic to your site. It’s possible that short keywords will become more prevalent than longtail keywords.

Using regular expressions (regex) we can easily segment our data based on the number of words in the keyword. If you use Google Analytics, just click on the links below to import these segments into your account.

One Word Segment

Two Words Segment

Three Words Segment

Three or more Words Segment

Four or more Words Segment

Once you have done this you can apply these segments to your reports:

Hi Michael,

Love these segments! I’ve added them to my Google Analytics accounts.

Funny is that two word search terms stays behind in conversion rate in comparison with the other three segments.

Hey Michael,
Thanks for sharing this!

@dylan Just tried it, and on the website that I manage, looks like the ’4 or more’ has the highest conversion, though very few visits. ’2 words’ is second best on conversion.

Thanks Stefaan and Dylan,

Sounds like visitors using four or more words really know what they are looking for. Another tip is to filter out your brand keywords first. Those you will convert for anyway.
